Rhode Island Red chickens originated in Adamsville, R.I. from several strains, particularly Malays. An imported Malay rooster from England is considered one of the foundation birds that played a big part in developing Rhode Island Reds.
A good egg producing breed, hens can lay 200 or more eggs per year given the proper nutrition. Suitable for confinement or free ranging, these birds are an excellent choice for a backyard flock.
Usually a docile breed but have been known to be aggressive to other breeds in confinement. Rhode Island Red Roosters have been known to attack and even kill small animals when intruded upon.
