Phoenix chickens are a result of German breeder Hugo du Roi, who selectively bred long-tailed Japanese chickens to create these unique birds. Phoenix chickens molt every other year, and are known for their rigid sickle feathers two to five long, with their saddle feather capable of growing from 12 to 18 inches.
Phoenix chickens have a pheasant-like appearance, are fair layers, and hens do get broody. They do exceptionally well when allowed to free range. They are also flighty birds, as the video below shows.
