Araucana

Araucana hatching eggs

Araucana chickens originated from Indians in Chile. Mistakenly referred to as Easter egg chickens because they lay blue or turqoise eggs.
These unusual birds in the purebred form are rumpless and have ear tufts. Sometimes confused with the Ameraucana which have a well developed tail, a full beard, and muffs on each side of the face.
These birds are raised primarily by some for their unique eggs, they also in fact are quite good dual purpose birds.

The blue color of the eggs comes from a deposition of a liverbile pigment throughout the egg. This can also be seen inside the shell. The gene that causes the blue color is a genetically dominant trait. When Aruacanas are crossed with other breeds, the hen will always lay blue or tinted eggs.
